Why Write a Trade Journal?

There are many good reasons to write trade journals. The main reason I write the journal is to help me remember my trade setups and trade entry rules. The 2nd reason is to help Future Traders subscribers in making the correct entries.

Trade Journal for 02/17/2022

Chart Setup is the same as yesterday.

1st cloud channel trade made both targets.

There was two trades in the trade entry above ; one right after the other. I missed the 2nd one, a trade right after an exit is sometimes hard to see after watching the charts to exit the previous trade the next entry seems like a long ways off. There was also 2 channels. I circled the low anchor points in orange in the 1st image below. In the 2nd image below the 1st trade all the check boxes could be checked, the 2nd image only the Channel Trade check boxes could be checked.

Futures Trading Advantages When Trading Futures

Futures trading is buying a contract on some asset believing the market will go up or selling a Futures Contract on some asset believing the market will go down. The most widely trade Future Contracts are the  S&P 500, Nasdaq, Oil, Gas, Gold and Silver. You can open a NinjaTrader account with their brokerages with $400 and day trade but there is one restriction. Each broker has an amount you must have in your account to hold a trade until the next day. In the S&P Futures Market the day closes at 4:15 PM EST and your trade needs to be closed before that time if you don’t have enough money to carry the trade over to the next day. When the market opens again you can place your trade again usually 6:00 PM EST.

Best Futures Market to Trade

The E-mini S&P 500 Futures, composed of stocks of 500 large companies, is considered to be the best market to trade. The S&P 500 futures are one of the most liquid and most traded futures products in the U.S. and not as volatile as the Nasdaq which is mostly comprised of Tech Stocks.

When to Switch from Trading Real vs Trading Simulated

When you have back-tested your system and traded it successfully for a month you may be ready to switch to trading with a real money. The best way to start out trading with real money is to start with a small account trading the S&P Micro Lot size in the Futures. This lot size trades at $1.25 per tick and there are 4 ticks in a point which is $5 a point. The reason it is better to start off with a small account size is as you see this account grow you don’t see it growing much and it is about the same as Simulated Trading. You are making the conversion over to Real and not noticing the anxiety you would have if you were seeing losses. The S&P is a little less volatile than the Nasdaq which is tech stocks. As your small account grows into a large account you become accustomed to the Account size and dollar size of the trades and are not as easily effected by the profit and loss.

Making a Small Account Lucrative

The majority of people starting a trading career start out with a small account and begin to begin practicing the process of trading Futures. Sometimes this process goes well, most of the time there are problems that can arise that cause the traders to have a hard time in their learning process.

The two main reasons are:
• The system they are trading is hard to trade and difficult to understand.
• The trader does not follow the rules of the trading system.

The way to solve the #1 problem is by back-testing the trading system and find the trade entries on your chart. Mark the times when the trade entries take place and load coinciding playback data to back test those trades and see if you would have been able to recognize the trade in real time on playback.

To solve the second problem is a mindset problem. You have to make up your mind your going to follow the rules and not deviate from the rules. That does mean the rules are always good. Sometimes the rules have to be altered until you have a working rule set. Also, to help with the mindset of trading you need to know how much money you can make with the trading system you are using and the possible win rate of that system.
